Great story! I like the use of Chinese for the “advanced” humans.

Very nice, Jack. Opening the thread and then closing it. Explicit and implicit world-building and written in an accessible but evocative style perfect for sci-fi.

Nice twist at the end! For a moment, I was predicting the opposite would happen. Congrats!

"Father and Son" by Cat Stevens, played in my head during their farewells.

Exceptional - both emotionally and setting-wise. You encapsulated the age old conflict of "son's desire to make his father proud" and "father's desire to keep his son safe". Your pre-space-travel setting merges well with this conflict too; there's an inherent feeling of danger in travelling to far stars. The risk of disaster is ingrained in our minds from movies/TV like Lost in Space and Scavengers Reign. It makes the stakes that much greater, and the emotions that much stronger.
