It's a really interesting concept, this ans i enjoyed the article. Have you read Accelerando by Charles Stross? that explores many themes arising from the premise of uploading the mind to data. deservedly award winning work from Mr Stross. highly recommended.
Really enjoyed reading more behind this story as it truly is an intriguing premise. Thanks for submitting it to the anthology and for being such a pleasure to work with.
Interesting premise. My own story research has led me down similar philosophical paths but with different outcomes.
"Having evolved in a physical world, human consciousness needed a simulated body and sensory environment to function." - This is very true. Experiments have shown that putting people in an environment absent of any sensory stimulation (eg a flotation tank in an anechoic chamber) soon leads to hallucinations, and even psychotic episodes similar to sleep deprivation.
So choosing to "just sit in the dark and think" isn't an easy option, and is currently considered a form of torture by some governments.
Thanks for your comment, Nick. I have not read Accelerando, but will definitely add it to my TBR list.
Fascinating questions! There was a great Black Mirror (Netflix) show that explored this theme.

CONGRATULATIONS JACK! But not surprising - you are an exceptional and highly intelligent writer.
Thank you so much, Malia!
